The Land Portal at the World Bank Land Conference 2024

For over two decades, the World Bank Land Conference has been an important and necessary forum for the land sector, bringing together participants from governments, development partners, civil society, academia, and the private sector to showcase research, discuss issues and good practice, and inform policy dialogue. The Conference encourages cross-sectoral knowledge exchange and this year, the Land Portal team is eager to attend the relaunched Land Conference from May 13-17, 2024 in Washington, DC.

“Justice for all in the management of land conflicts ”: Introducing a new LAND-at-scale project in Burundi

The Land and Development Expertise Center (LADEC) and the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) are excited to announce their partnership for a new LAND-at-scale project in Burundi: "Justice pour Toutes et Tous dans la Gestion des Conflits Fonciers" (JTT-GCF) (in English: Justice for all in the management of land conflicts. Starting September 2023, the project will run for a period of three years, focusing on promotion equality and non-discrimination in the management of land conflicts.

Launching the LAND-at-scale project in Iraq

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), the Netherlands embassy in Bagdad (EKN) and the Netherlands Enterprise and Development Agency (RVO) are delighted to announce a LAND-at-scale project in Iraq. Over the coming three years, the project will work to initiate policy dialogue on the land legal framework reform and work to secure tenure rights for Internally Displaced People (IDPs) and returnees in Iraq

South African Land Conference on The Failed Promise of Tenure Security: Customary Land Rights and Dispossession: The last word

Citizens of rural communities across the country who are fighting for their land rights are outraged at the government’s treatment of them, likening it to apartheid and colonialism.

Violence, intimidation, assassinations and dispossession are continuing in parts of the country as black South Africans struggle to defend their land rights against moves by the government, often in cahoots with traditional leaders and private companies.

Land Documentation is Not a Blanket Solution for Tenure Security

Land tenure security is the protection people can have from the state that their land parcels will not be bullied away from them by vested interests through unfair evictions. 

It is the opposite of land tenure insecurity.

There are many forms of land documentation. This includes land titles (a legal document that outlines a person's rights) and deeds (legal document of transfer of land/title from one person to another).

Hosted Under the Patronage of His Majesty King Abdullah IIBin Al Hussein, the Global Land Forum focused on "Pathways to Climate Solutions"

The Forum is the first of its kind in the Middle East and North Africa, taking place in the Dead Sea at the King Hussein Bin Talal Convention Centre. More than 800 participants, speakers, and experts representing 78 countries came together to discuss critical issues related to climate change, land rights, food systems and other topics.

Updated SDG Land Tracker makes dispersed land data easily accessible

February 2, 2022 (GLOBAL) — Six years into the establishment of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Land Portal is re-examining progress made on land-related SDG indicators. More than a dozen land-related indicators are housed over five SDG goals. The newly updated SDG Land Tracker features completely revised and updated narratives for 13 land-related indicators describing why the indicator is important and how the indicators are measured and monitored.
