Kolkata: The Mamata Banerjee government will introduce a Bill in the state Assembly to ensure land rights to the residents of enclaves (Chitmahal) in Cooch Behar.

It may be mentioned that 14,854 people had become Indian citizens with 51 enclaves of Chitmahal coming within the country's jurisdiction in July 2015. But still, land rights issues have not been settled yet for thousands of enclave dwellers.

Now, in a bid to give relief to them, the state government is going to table the Bill in the forthcoming Assembly session.

The first official results from an international survey of how secure people feel in their homes and on their land were published today, revealing that in the initial 15 countries surveyed, 25% of citizens are concerned that their property could be taken away from them. Indonesia has been slow in granting forest tenure to indigenous peoples and local communities after an historic court ruling five years ago mandated that the government recognize their tenure rights.

A study released by the Rights and Resources Initiative (RRI) on Monday revealed that the total amount of land designated for indigenous peoples and local communities only grew from 0.22 million hectares  in 2002 to 0.79 million in 2017. The Land and GLTN Unit, located within the Urban Legislation, Land and Governance (ULLG) Branch of UN-Habitat, has the objective to develop, test and disseminate pro-poor and gender responsive tools and approaches regarding land, innovative residential tenures, affordable land management/administration systems, and land related regulatory/legal frameworks and tools.

Indigenous peoples in the Peruvian Amazon have united and created the Wampis Nation – an autonomous territorial government – in order to defend their livelihood from the increasing pressure from extractive industries. Their autonomous government covers nearly an area the size of one-third of the Netherlands and more than 15,000 people are part of this one-of-a-kind initiative.

This is a call for expressions of interest in carrying out evaluation studies aimed at helping the Land Portal Foundation assess its current progress and develop its capacity to achieve its strategic goals.
