This Act is composed of 35 articles divided into eight Chapters. It aims at establishing the terms under which the creation, exercise, modification, transfer and termination of the right of land use and benefit operates. It regulates ownership of the land and public domain, the right of use and benefit of land, powers and responsibilities of the concerned public bodies.

The Act makes provision for the promotion and recognition of the rights of Indigenous Cultural Communities/Indigenous Peoples (ICCs/IPs), with a view to preserve their culture, traditions and institutions and to ensure the equal protection and non-discrimination of members.

La presente Ley tiene por objeto reconocer y proteger a los pueblos indígenas del Estado de Chiapas, como así también los derechos de las comunidades indígenas asentadas por cualquier circunstancia, dentro del territorio del Estado, pertenecientes a cualquier otro pueblo indígena.

This Act establishes periods of limitation and other limitations for bringing actions of the various classes mentioned in the Act. Section 42 extends the applicability of the Act also to arbitration.
