Start codon-targeted marker evaluation of genetic relationship and population structure in southern Nigerian fluted pumpkin (Telfairia occidentalis Hook F.) collection
Fluted pumpkin (Telfairia occidentalis Hook F.) is an underutilized indigenous leafy vegetable with enormous prospects for food security in sub-Saharan Africa. However, relatively little is known about genetic relationships and population structure in the species. In this study, 32 landraces of fluted pumpkin collected across three southern geographical regions in Nigeria were assessed for genetic diversity and population structure using 8 start codon-targeted (SCoT) makers.

The participation, engagement, and interaction of local actors in the Innovahubs is an essential part of the development and strengthening of the subnational innovation systems, so knowing and understanding the nature, identity and presence, and involvement of each type of actor over time is essential to understand their behavior and motivations to partake in the knowledge and innovation processes. Therefore, this report seeks to update on the actors participating in the relevant activities in the Innovahub, their activities, and the type of relations they have with other actors.
Gender equality and women’s empowerment in rural transformation: From evidence to public action
The slow, limited, and uneven progress on women’s empowerment and gender equality over the last decade clearly shows that rural transformation, with its focus on efficiency and productivity, is leaving women behind in addition to having negative impacts on the environment and nutrition. New inclusive models of rural transformation are called for. The study argues that treating gender equality and women’s empowerment as key in the process of rural transformation will lead to a more inclusive and resilient transformation of rural spaces.

Dans la région des grands lacs africains, et plus particulièrement dans les milieux ruraux de la RDC et du Rwanda, le secteur agricole joue un rôle prédominant dans l’économie locale et constitue le principal moyen de subsistance des ménages. Ce dernier, évalué en termes de capital financier, humain, matériel, naturel et du capital social favorise le développement agricole des ménages. Malheureusement, dans les zones rurales de la RDC et du Rwanda, mobiliser ces différentes formes de capital pour le bien-être des ménages demeure un défi important à relever.

Conservation and prioritization of indigenous vegetables in the Philippines
Nutrition-related problems are a widespread challenge in the Philippines. Many factors contribute to these problems - the availability and affordability of vegetables, for example, which are jeopardized by challenges such as seasonality and inconsistent yields due to the impacts of climate change. Crop improvement and on-farm diversification, particularly using indigenous vegetables (IVs), can help address these challenges, while also improving rural livelihoods, nutrition, and food security; and even safeguarding local culture and tradition.

This working paper was developed based on a policy and literature review to take stock of the latest information on forest-food linkages in Kenya. Our review shows Kenya’s forests play important roles in providing food directly to local communities, as well as requisite conditions for sustainable food production systems in the country. Food-forest linkages are widely articulated in different policies issued by the Government of Kenya that draw on the principle of producing food without destroying forests.
