The World Bank is a vital source of financial and technical assistance to developing countries around the world. We are not a bank in the ordinary sense but a unique partnership to reduce poverty and support development. The World Bank Group has two ambitious goals: End extreme poverty within a generation and boost shared prosperity.

  • To end extreme poverty, the Bank's goal is to decrease the percentage of people living on less than $1.25 a day to no more than 3% by 2030.
  • To promote shared prosperity, the goal is to promote income growth of the bottom 40% of the population in each country.

The World Bank Group comprises five institutions managed by their member countries.

The World Bank Group and Land: Working to protect the rights of existing land users and to help secure benefits for smallholder farmers

The World Bank (IBRD and IDA) interacts primarily with governments to increase agricultural productivity, strengthen land tenure policies and improve land governance. More than 90% of the World Bank’s agriculture portfolio focuses on the productivity and access to markets by small holder farmers. Ten percent of our projects focus on the governance of land tenure.

Similarly, investments by the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the World Bank Group’s private sector arm, including those in larger scale enterprises, overwhelmingly support smallholder farmers through improved access to finance, inputs and markets, and as direct suppliers. IFC invests in environmentally and socially sustainable private enterprises in all parts of the value chain (inputs such as irrigation and fertilizers, primary production, processing, transport and storage, traders, and risk management facilities including weather/crop insurance, warehouse financing, etc

Permitting and Licensing Regimes for Renewable Energy Projects

Julio, 2015

Permitting, licensing, and other
authorization procedures are an integral part of investing
in renewable energy. For private companies, the quality of
these procedures can drastically affect transaction costs
and project risk. Optimal regimes are tailored to country
specifics and depend on the way in which private investors
access the market in the first place—from auctions to
site-specific tenders to standardized contracts on a

Improving Gender Equality and Rural Livelihoods in Senegal through Sustainable and Participatory Energy Management

Julio, 2015

Launched in 2011, the Second Sustainable
and Participatory Energy Management Project (PROGEDE II) for
Senegal has been hailed for effectively mainstreaming a
gender perspective into an energy project. Under the
project, women have participated more in decision making;

Republic of Sudan Diagnostic Trade Integration Study Update

Julio, 2015

The Diagnostic Trade Integration Study
(DTIS) update identifies priority actions in support of the
Government of Sudan (GOS) commitment to increase trade and
diversify the economy. The current study builds on the
earlier 2008 DTIS by identifying the major factors holding
back the increase of agricultural exports and economic
diversification. The report identifies a package of measures
that will support Sudan to more effectively realize its

Sources of Ethnic Inequality in Vietnam

Julio, 2015
Vietnam

Vietnam's ethnic minorities, who tend to
live mostly in remote rural areas, typically have lower
living standards than the ethnic majority. How much is this
because of differences in economic characteristics (such as
education levels and land) rather than low returns to
characteristics? Is there a self-reinforcing culture of
poverty in the minority groups, reflecting patterns of past
discrimination? The authors find that differences in levels
