The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations leads international efforts to defeat hunger. Serving both developed and developing countries, FAO acts as a neutral forum where all nations meet as equals to negotiate agreements and debate policy. FAO is also a source of knowledge and information. We help developing countries and countries in transition modernize and improve agriculture, forestry and fisheries practices and ensure good nutrition for all. Since our founding in 1945, we have focused special attention on developing rural areas, home to 70 percent of the world's poor and hungry people.

FAO has been coordinating global forest resources assessments every five to ten years since 1946 (FAO, 2006), with the objective to provide a periodic global and uniform picture of existing forests, derived trends and statistics. Light textured sandy soils are ubiquitous throughout the tropics and constitute an important soil resource on which millions are dependent for their livelihoods. Spanning a range of rainfall regimes from the arid to the humid tropics, they present unique sustainability and environmental challenges to resource managers. Physical, chemical and biological characteristics of sandy soils often act as a severe limitation in crop production.
