The research note discusses the Small Farmers Large Field (SFLF) collective action piloted in the states of Odisha and Assamaimed at addressing the challenges faced by small and marginal potato farmers. The model focuses on aggregating farmers to achieve bargaining power, synchronize operations, and improve quality by adopting a single variety of potato. The study uses a mixed method research design to assess the benefits of the SFLF model, including improved quality of inputs, increased mechanization, emerging social networks, and market linkages. The results indicate a significant increase in net profit for participating farmers in both states due to higher gross revenue and lower cost of production. Our preliminary assessment suggests that this model has led to improved yields, enhanced production practices, and the development of social networks among farmers. Additionally, the SFLF model has facilitated better market linkages, resulting in lower prices for seeds and premium prices for produce. However, the study also identifies challenges and areas for improvement, such as the need for increased awareness, timely provision of inputs, and overcoming obstacles related to market prices and storage options. The SFLF model could potentially emerge as a sustainable solution for agricultural development in the region and there is a need for subsequent research to increase the scale and impact of the model.
