Land selection for cultivation of sugar beet in Slovakia

Policy Papers & Briefs
Agosto, 2013
Eslovaquia

The article aims to analyze suitability of land selection for cultivation of sugar beet in Slovakia in the period from 2008 to 2012. The results confirmed, that there are enough soils suitable for sugar beet growing in Slovakia. The area of sugar beet cultivation is conditioned by the presence of only two sugar rafineries, which are in operation, in Sered and Trencianska Tepla. The most productive soils in the climatically most suitable areas of Slovakia are chosen for growing sugar beet.

A study on determination of agricultural use suitability of agricultural lands

Policy Papers & Briefs
Diciembre, 2007
Turquía

In this study, by using cellular analyze method according to ecological criteria, the determination of agricultural land suitability of Research and Practice Farm of Ankara University Agrucultural Faculty Farm and Haymana Research Farm of Central Research Institute for Field Crops lands, which are in Ankara province and Haymana district, was aimed. For this aim, by using Geographical Information Systems(GIS) techniques, the data layers such as some soil properties, topography and irrigation was examined for each land criterion to determine the weighted scale.

Predicting regolith thickness in the complex weathering setting of the central Mt Lofty Ranges, South Australia

Journal Articles & Books
Diciembre, 2013
Australia

We describe a model to predict regolith thickness in a 128,000ha study area in the central Mt Lofty Ranges in South Australia. The term regolith encompasses soil (A and B horizons) and highly weathered bedrock (C horizon). The thickness of the regolith has a major control on water holding capacity for plant growth and movement of water through the landscape, and as such is important in hydropedological modelling and in evaluating land suitability, e.g. for forestry and agriculture. Thickness estimates also have direct application in mineral exploration and seismic risk assessment.

Characteristics, suitability and recommendations for management of land in acid sulfate soil-affected brackishwater ponds for tiger prawn (Penaeus monodon) culture in Luwu Regency, Indonesia

Journal Articles & Books
Diciembre, 2014
Indonesia

Luwu is one of the regencies located on the east coast of South Sulawesi Province, Indonesia which has large brackishwater ponds area, but it has a low productivity of shrimp and fish. Therefore, a study was carried out to know the land characteristics for determining suitability and management of land for tiger prawn (Penaeus monodon) culture in brackishwater ponds to increase the productivity and sustainability. Factors considered in land characteristics are: topography and tidal range, soil quality, water quality and climate.

Site Suitability and Land Availability for Endospermum medullosum Plantation on Espiritu Santo, Vanuatu

Journal Articles & Books
Diciembre, 2012
Vanuatu

SUMMARYSite and soil characteristics associated with existing plantings of whitewood (Endospermum medullosum Euphorbiaceae) were characterised across Espiritu Santo Island in Vanuatu. Two hundred, generally small (most commonly around 0.5 ha), plantations dominated by whitewood have been planted across the eastern side of the island. These plantations range up to 20 years in age and provide a guide to the expected growth rates of whitewood in plantation in those areas.

Land suitability assessment for wind power plant site selection using ANP-DEMATEL in a GIS environment: case study of Ardabil province, Iran

Irán

Wind energy is a renewable energy resource that has increased in usage in most countries. Site selection for the establishment of large wind turbines, called wind farms, like any other engineering project, requires basic information and careful planning. This study assessed the possibility of establishing wind farms in Ardabil province in northwestern Iran by using a combination of analytic network process (ANP) and decision making trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL) methods in a geographical information system (GIS) environment.

Bayesian Network Application to Land Suitability Classification in the Sewage Sludge Amendment of Agricultural Soils

Journal Articles & Books
Diciembre, 2014
España

Sewage sludge (SS) amendment of agricultural soils has recently become an issue of great interest because improvements in wastewater treatment systems have increased production of this type of waste. This practice is known to benefit soil and crops. However, the potential contamination of the environmental matrices has been rarely assessed because suitable models and data regarding the diffuse contamination of SS in agricultural fields are limited.

Investigating the Promotion Possibility of No-Hunting Areas to the Protected Areas- a Case Study

Journal Articles & Books
Diciembre, 2013

Protected areas are established to conserve unique features and biodiversity of the nature. Accordingly, wherever has one of the natural, ecological and/or cultural values it should be considered a protected area. Kave-Deh No-hunting Area is located on extremely east of Tehran Province in an area of 94,961 ha. Due to rich and diverse land cover, distinctive wildlife species, and unique monuments the area was selected as a case study to examine the possibility of its promotion to the protected area using Spatial Multi Criteria Evaluation (SMCE) Method.

España

The purpose of this work was to adapt the MicroLEIS - Land Evaluation Information System developed in Spain to the Brazilian Southeast conditions. Twelve (12) variables were considered, as follows: A - Relief Factor: 1) Slope; B - Soil Factor: 2) Effective depth, 3) Texture, 4) Stoniness, 5) Drainage, 6) Salinity; C - Erosion Factor: 7) Erodibility, 8) Slope, 9) Vegetation density, 10) Rainfall erosivity; D - Bioclimatic Deficiency Factor: 11) Frost, 12) Available water. For each of them, the control parameters were changed, according to conditions of the soils of the State of São Paulo.

Albania

Creation of the Land Information System integrated in the Geographical Information System (GIS) is the main objective of this article in assisting local Government for the sustainable management of land resources. Through this study it was made possible to provide a spatial database at communal level, was also carried out the study of soil and land suitability, data on land use, analysis on land use changes and agricultural land urbanization. The geographical space, in which LIS is set, which is also the objective of this study is Shales commune, Elbasani district.

Agriculture Land Suitability Evaluator (ALSE): A decision and planning support tool for tropical and subtropical crops

Journal Articles & Books
Diciembre, 2013

Agricultural land suitability evaluation for crop production is a process that requires specialized geo-environmental information and the expertise of a computer scientist to analyze and interpret the information. This paper presents ALSE, an intelligent system for assessing land suitability for different types of crops in tropical and subtropical regions (e.g. mango, banana, papaya, citrus, and guava) based on geo-environmental factors that automates the process of evaluation and illustrates the results on an attribute table.
