SECURING LAND TENURE: Proposed reforms are meant to protect tenants
The State Minister for Lands Sam Mayanja has responded to critics who accuse him of spearheading a plot by government to abolish the Mailo land tenure system and replace it with a freehold land tenure system. Mayanja has explained that the new proposals are instead aimed at strengthening ownership of land by the tenants on Mailo land so that they can acquire freehold land titles in perpetuity.
FAO, govt to address post harvest fish loss
FISHERMEN in Lake Tanganyika lose between 50 and 70 percent of fish catch due to post-harvest fish losses, fisheries experts have said.
Director General of Tanzania Fisheries Research Institute (TAFIRI) Dr. Ismael Kimirei said many
fishermen get huge loss because they don’t have proper handling, processing and storage facilities right from the net to the market.
He said during sunny, the losses range beyween 40 to 50 percent but during cloudy and rainy, the losses go up to 70 percent.
UN food agencies warn of rising levels of acute hunger with potential risk of famine in four hotspots

A section of rights groups believe that Kenyans have not been sensitized enough on the matter, calling for urgent measures to ensure no one is locked out.

Announcing the LAND-at-scale project in Rwanda
The Rwanda Land Management & Use Authority (RMLUA), the Netherlands embassy in Kigali (EKN) and the Netherlands Enterprise and Development Agency (RVO) are delighted to announce a LAND-at-scale project in Rwanda. Together with Kadaster International and the International Development Law Organization (IDLO), the RMLUA, EKN and RVO will be collaborating on an ambitious project over the coming four years.
NEW PLAN TO RAISE SUGAR PRODUCTION IS LAUDABLE
Tanzania’s plan to draft in small-scale entrepreneurs, and produce at least 700,000 tonnes of sugar annually by 2025 is ambitious, to say the least.
However, this does not in any way mean that the plan is impossible to execute or ill-advised.
According to Industry and Trade minister Kitila Mkumbo, the government intends to engage small-scale processors who will complement large-scale manufacturers in order to attain this noble goal.
250 Kilwa District women set to receive customary title deeds
A TOTAL of 250 women from 14 wards of Kilwa District in Lindi Region will soon receive customary title deeds, something that will enable them to access loans, thus engage fully in economic activities including agriculture.

Avocados’ potential to cut poverty
Dar es Salaam. Avocado is a fruit crop that thrives in many parts of Tanzania, with the possibility of using it to free Tanzanians from abject poverty and improve families’ levels of nutrition.
Mbeya, Njombe, Songwe, Iringa, Tanga, Arusha, Kilimanjaro, Kigoma, Kagera, Katavi and Morogoro are popular regions for avocado production in the land.
A report by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) says that 19,449 tonnes of avocados were produced in 2016/17.
