Navigating the Storm: Water Justice in Coastal Bangladesh

Bangladesh is the 7th most climate vulnerable country, and the impacts of this are largely shaped by water-related challenges in this deltaic country. The gendered dimensions of these challenges are poorly understood and addressed in technical interventions designed to mitigate and enable adaptation to climate impacts. A focus on gender (read women) is often limited to WASH interventions, or at best extends to women’s representation in irrigation water user associations.

AICCRA Zambia – Affordability study with farmers using the CSA/CIS innovations report

The objective of the study was to understand end-users' capacity and willingness to purchase products and services scaled through the AICCRA Zambia CSA/CIS bundles. A total of 61 farmers were interviewed through in-person visits (3 for the Solar bundle, 15 for the Aquaculture bundle, 29 for the Seeds bundle, 14 for the Integrated Livestock/Legume bundle). Farmers were interviewed in Central Province (Chibombo, Kapiri Mposhi), Luapula Province (Mansa), and Eastern Province (Chipata, Chipangali, Nyimba).

Transforming global food systems to promote food and nutritional security can help alleviate both poverty and ill-health, and support sustainable development. Such transformations need to be tailored and sensitive to the vulnerabilities and needs of marginalized communities yet are hindered by knowledge gaps. In particular, the food and nutrition security needs of the most vulnerable are often poorly understood, as are the policy frameworks and resource requirements associated with meeting their needs.

Are wheat-based farming systems in South Asia feminizing?

This article pulls together the state of knowledge on the degree to which wheat-based systems in Bangladesh, India, Nepal, and Pakistan, are feminizing. It is not yet possible to make definitive statements. However, it is clear that wheat-based systems are undergoing far-reaching changes in relation to “who does what” and “who decides.” There are some commonalities across all four countries. Intersectionalities shape women’s identities and abilities to exert their agency. Purdah is a cultural norm in many locations. Nevertheless, each country displays different meta-trends.

Assessing policy options for sustainable water use in India’s cereal production system

In India, the production of rice and wheat account for more than 80% of its total agricultural water use. As farming is highly dependent on water availability, rapidly receding water levels require urgent measures to manage withdrawals. We assess policy instruments that can reduce pressures on water resources, while at the same time limiting adverse impacts on water-intensive cereal production systems, land-use changes and economic welfare.

GROWING Nutritious Foods, GROWING Futures: The first cycle of the gender-transformative integrated climate smart agriculture-nutritionmarketing intervention gets off the ground in Northern Ghana

With the completion of the Project Implementation Plan in October 2022, work setting up the first two-year cycle of GROWING Future Clubs (GFCs) among households with young children in 36 communities began in earnest, focusing first on ensuring agricultural interventions occurred in a timely manner, then nutrition trainings, and getting gender champions in place to initiate gender dialogues at district and local levels. Much is being learned that will inform and improve the integrated intervention by the start of Cycle 2 in December 2023.

Failure to scale in digital agronomy: An analysis of site-specific nutrient management decision-support tools in developing countries

While many have extolled the potential impacts of digital advisory services for smallholder agriculture, the evidence for sustained uptake of such tools remains limited. This paper utilizes a survey of tool developers and researchers, as well as a systematic meta-analysis of prior studies, to assess the extent and challenges of scaling decision support tools for site-specific soil nutrient management (SSNM-DST) across smallholder farming systems, where “scaling” is defined as a significant increase in tool usage beyond pilot levels.

Unravelling the diversity in water usage among wild banana species in response to vapour pressure deficit

The rise in global temperature is not only affecting plant functioning directly, but is also increasing air vapour pressure deficit (VPD). The yield of banana is heavily affected by water deficit but so far breeding programs have never addressed the issue of water deficit caused by high VPD. A reduction in transpiration at high VPD has been suggested as a key drought tolerance breeding trait to avoid excessive water loss, hydraulic failure and to increase water use efficiency.

Sustainable management practices for durum wheat production: Analyzing specific agronomic interventions on productivity, grain micronutrient content, and quality

As compared with single agronomic crop management practices during grain formation, knowledge about integrated agronomic management practices on grain mineral composition and grain technological properties in durum wheat is limited. This knowledge is important for determining management strategies aimed at increasing grain yield without affecting grain nutritional quality. Integrated agronomic practices such as foliar nutrient application × seeding rate × varieties combined with growing locations were investigated to evaluate the dynamics of yield and grain quality traits.
