The impact of participatory action research and endogenous integrated soil fertility management on farm-gate dietary outputs in Northern Tanzania

In most developing countries, although agricultural extension and research devolved since 1980s to promote relevance, cost-effectiveness, ownership, and sustainability, participatory action research (PAR) have been run, albeit with limited empirical evidence on their impacts on farmers livelihoods. The study use a three-stage extended regression model (ERM) to estimate the effect PAR and the promoted agronomic practices on crop produce dietary outputs considering potential endogenous engagement, omitted variable bias, reverse causality, endogenous covariates, and factor simultaneity.

Examining the gender digital divide: A case study from rural Kenya

Worldwide, cell phones are used by 5.4 billion people. They are becoming increasingly prevalent in the rural areas of low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), providing smallholder farmers with access to agricultural markets. If they reduce information asymmetries between women and men farmers, they can also contribute to closing the gender gap in agricultural productivity. So far, however, digital innovations have had limited success in transforming agricultural systems. This may be due, in part, to the gender gap in cell-phone use.

But rigorous and reliable methods to measure food system resilience are still missing. In this paper, we build on the current literature to develop an analytical framework aimed at assessing the resilience of food systems at local level. The novel element of the analysis lies in the levels at which resilience is considered.

Ensuring a successful tomato crop and maximizing yield however hinges on the quality of seedlings and season-long management practices. Whether sourced from commercial nurseries or grown on-farm, good farm management should place emphasis on seedling establishment to enhance tomato productivity.

However, uptake of AI services is variable across the country. Information on individual animals born through AI and their performance levels within the different environments are lacking, hence difficult to evaluate the performance of the progeny born from AI bulls and to select best genetics.

Vegetables such as amaranth and cowpea are key in contributing to food and nutritional security. Fertilizers are used to mitigate low nutrient levels in soils. This study aimed to investigate the yield parameters of cowpea and amaranth vegetables.

Can partnerships improve the Indonesian oil palm smallholders’ inclusivity?

This study was conducted to analyze the factors influencing smallholder inclusivity. Oil palm smallholders were chosen, considering that palm oil is the largest agribusiness in Indonesia, and more than 40% of the total land area belongs to smallholders.

Helpers, employees or owners: Opportunities for women’s empowerment in agricultural value chains

Currently there is little evidence on differentiated gender roles and empowerment in value chains in the Latin America region and few comparative analyses on value chains and between value chain nodes. In this study, we examine different indicators of women’s empowerment among the production and processing nodes of two agricultural value chains—cashew and dairy—in Honduras to understand whether and how women’s roles in the value chains are related to their empowerment.

A Healthy, Inclusive, and Sustainable Food Systems Approach for India

The urgency of India’s food system transformation is more pronounced than ever. Despite high economic growth and rising per capita incomes, approximately 194 million people in India remain undernourished and there is a high prevalence of micronutrient deficiencies, particularly among women and children under 5 years. Agri-food systems in India employ more than 50% of the workforce and engage nearly 82% of smallholder farmers. Therefore, ensuring inclusive growth and reduced poverty necessitates new and enhanced livelihood and employment opportunities in the agri-food sector.
