Predictable patterns of unsustainable intensification

December, 2020
Turkey

To increase understanding of agricultural intensification processes over time and their sustainability, we studied dimensions of sustainability in the context of ongoing expansion of intensive, commercial mono-cropping of banana in Southwestern Uganda. In our approach we considered five dimensions of sustainability: economic, agricultural productivity, environment, social and human. We compared farming systems in 1998 and 2018 and integrated a gender lens.

Small farms and development in sub‑Saharan Africa: farming for food, for income or for lack of better options?

December, 2020
Global

Most food in sub-Saharan Africa is produced on small farms. Using large datasets from household surveys conducted across many countries, we find that the majority of farms are less than 1 ha, much smaller than previous estimates. Farms are larger in farming systems in drier climates. Through a detailed analysis of food self-sufficiency, food and nutrition security, and income among households from divergent farming systems in Ethiopia, Ghana, Mali, Malawi, Tanzania and Uganda, we reveal marked contrasts in food security and household incomes.

Wheat yield gaps across smallholder farming systems in Ethiopia

December, 2020
Ethiopia

Wheat yields in Ethiopia need to increase considerably to reduce import dependency and keep up with the expected increase in population and dietary changes. Despite the yield progress observed in recent years, wheat yield gaps remain large. Here, we decompose wheat yield gaps in Ethiopia into efficiency, resource, and technology yield gaps and relate those yield gaps to broader farm(ing) systems aspects.

Assessing potential locations for flood-based farming using satellite imagery: a case study of Afar region, Ethiopia

December, 2021
Ethiopia

The dry lowlands of Ethiopia are seasonally affected by long periods of low rainfall and, coinciding with rainfall in the Amhara highlands, flood waters which flow onto the lowlands resulting in damage to landscapes and settlements. In an attempt to convert water from storm generated floods into productive use, this study proposes a methodology using remote sensing data and geographical information system tools to identify potential sites where flood spreading weirs may be installed and farming systems developed which produce food and fodder for poor rural communities.

Characterizing the diversity of farming systems at the municipal level in Nepal through a quantitative typology

December, 2022
Nepal

The Sustainable Intensification of Mixed Farming Systems (SIMFS) is a CGIAR initiative. This initiative ‘aims to provide equitable, transformative pathways for improved livelihoods of actors in mixed farming systems through sustainable intensification within target agroecological and socioeconomic settings. To achieve this, different methodologies, innovations, and practices have been implemented to understand and improve the agroecological/productive conditions to assess a benefit on nutrition, food security and welfare.

The Agroecology Transition: Different pathways to a single destination - Eight country experiences

December, 2022
Global

Agroecology is a transdisciplinary, participatory, and action-oriented approach for co-designing options that enhance food system resilience, equity, and sustainability. Working in eight countries of the Global South, the CGIAR Initiative on Agroecology seeks effective ways to put this approach into practice.

Building resilient crop-livestock farming systems in Senegal

December, 2021
Senegal

The Senegalese agricultural and livestock sector is the main economic activity representing approximately 17% of the
gross domestic product (GDP) and employing 70% of the population. Around 350,000 families nationwide carry out livestock breeding activities, representing nearly 30% of Senegalese farmers.
Limited agricultural production conditions, characterized by poor soils and weather conditions, limited access to
advisory services, and poor-quality agricultural inputs and insufficient infrastructure contribute to Senegal’s inability to

How is organic farming performing agronomically and economically in sub-Saharan Africa?

December, 2020
Global

The potential of organic agriculture and agroecological approaches for improving food security in Africa is a controversial topic in global discussions. While there is a number of meta-analyses on the environmental, agronomic and financial performance of organic farming, most of the underlying data stems from on-station field trials from temperate regions. Data from sub-Sahara Africa in particular, as well as detailed real-farm data is scarce. How organic farming is implemented in sub-Saharan Africa and how it performs in a smallholder context remains poorly understood.

Sustainable development and management of a crucial natural resource : A research protocol to model groundwater flow in Nalanda District, Bihar, India

December, 2022
India

Across South Asia, millions of small-scale farmers are confronted with a range of urgent challenges. These include poverty, malnutrition, environmental deterioration, and the growing impacts of climate change and unpredictability (Ericksen et al., 2011). Despite these pressing concerns, the region’s farming systems still have potential to sustainably its productivity and profitability (Islam et al., 2019; Gathala et al., 2021).

Ghana planning and implementation progress report for the CGIAR Initiative on Sustainable Intensification of Mixed Farming Systems

December, 2021
Ghana

This report captures key outputs, and follow-up actions since the Ghana Country Planning and Inception Meeting for the Sustainable Intensification of Mixed farming Systems Initiative was held in Accra, Ghana, on 12 July 2022. Various partners have been engaged in the Initiative in Ghana so far, including the National Agricultural Research and Extension Systems (NARES), Universities, and National governments/ agricultural administrations (See participants list in Annex).

Proceedings of the 2023 year-end workshop with the partners on Sustainable Intensification of Mixed Farming Systems (SI-MFS)

December, 2022
Global

The 2023 year-end workshop with the national partners from the CGIAR Initiative SIMFS was held on 2 December in Hotel Sarina, Dhaka, Bangladesh. The meeting was presided over by Dr. Humnath Bhandari, IRRI Representative for Bangladesh. Scientists from different NARSE organizations (BARI, BRRI, BLRI) were present in this workshop.

Impact assessment of a local seventeen-year initiative on cassava-based soil conservation measure on sloping land as a climate-smart agriculture practice in Van Yen District, Yen Bai Province, Vietnam

December, 2019
Netherlands

Van Yen District in Yen Bai Province represents the general terrain conditions and farming systems of the northern mountainous region of Vietnam. It has suffered land degradation due to soil erosion and nutrient depletion, which in turn led to declined crop yield, and food insecurity. The district experienced these impacts due to unsustainable upland agricultural practices. The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development realized that their previous practices would not leave anything behind for the next generations.
