Modelling Deforestation and Land Cover Transitions of Tropical Peatlands in Sumatra, Indonesia Using Remote Sensed Land Cover Data Sets

In Southeast Asia land use change associated with forest loss and degradation is a major source of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This is of particular concern where deforestation occurs on peat soils. A business-as-usual (BAU) land change model was developed using Dinamica EGO© for a REDD+ Demonstration Activity area in south-east Jambi Province, Sumatra, Indonesia containing Berbak National Park (NP). The model output will be used as baseline land change predictions for comparison with alternative land cover management scenarios as part of a REDD+ feasibility study.

Integrating Forest Cover Change with Census Data: Drivers and Contexts from Bolivia and the Lao PDR

The aim of this paper is to explore possible links between forest cover change and characteristics of social-ecological systems at sub-national scale based mainly on census data. We assessed relationships between population density, poverty, ethnicity, accessibility and forest cover change during the last decade for four regions of Bolivia and the Lao PDR, combining a parcel-based with a cell-based approach.

The production of soy is one of the most important economic activities in the Brazilian Amazon, though the expansion of this industry has come at the cost of huge swaths of forest. Since 2006, the private firms that buy and trade soybeans globally have assumed a key role in ensuring that soy producers comply with forest protection policies, including the Soy Moratorium and public policies banning the use of illegally deforested land.

The Positive Feedback Loop between the Impacts of Climate Change and Agricultural Expansion and Relocation

Climate change and agriculture influence each other. The effects of climate change on agriculture seem to be predominantly negative, although studies show a large variation in impacts between crops and regions. To compensate for these effects, agriculture can either intensify or expand in area; both of these options increase greenhouse gas emissions. It is therefore likely that such negative effects will increase agriculture’s contribution to climate change, making this feedback a positive, self-reinforcing one.

Targeted illegal harvesting of hardwood in the woodland of Namibia’s Kavango region threatens forest stands. In a transforming setting, where wood is increasingly traded through value chains on a globalized market, local harvesters have complex incentives but also a crucially important position. Sustainability largely depends on their choices. Such choices are being influenced by awareness campaigns and decentralized forest management, which are being lauded and supported.

Estimating deforested areas and deforestation rates have become key steps for quantifying environmental services of tropical rain forests, particularly as linked to programs such as Reduced Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD). In Southeastern Peru, reliable estimates of land-cover change (LCC) are important for monitoring changes in the landscape due to agricultural expansion, pasture creation and other socio-economic influences triggered by the Inter-Oceanic Highway (IOH).

Design and Interpretation of Intensity Analysis Illustrated by Land Change in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia

Intensity Analysis has become popular as a top-down hierarchical accounting framework to analyze differences among categories, such as changes in land categories over time. Some aspects of interpretation are straightforward, while other aspects require deeper thought. This article explains how to interpret Intensity Analysis with respect to four concepts. First, we illustrate how to analyze whether error could account for non-uniform changes. Second, we explore two types of the large dormant category phenomenon. Third, we show how results can be sensitive to the selection of the domain.

The publication details how the air is increasingly being polluted, the water systems are diminishing in quantity and deteriorating in quality. The desertification process threatens the land and its cover. The soils are being eroded leading to siltation of the ocean and lakes. The forests are being depleted with impunity thus destroying the water catchments.

Exploring the biophysical option space for feeding the world without deforestation

Safeguarding the world’s remaining forests is a high-priority goal. We assess the biophysical option space for feeding the world in 2050 in a hypothetical zero-deforestation world. We systematically combine realistic assumptions on future yields, agricultural areas, livestock feed and human diets. For each scenario, we determine whether the supply of crop products meets the demand and whether the grazing intensity stays within plausible limits. We find that many options exist to meet the global food supply in 2050 without deforestation, even at low crop-yield levels.

Après la COP28, favoriser l’innovation pour mieux mesurer l’adaptation

À mesure que les impacts du changement climatique s’intensifient, il est essentiel de comprendre si l’humanité est sur la bonne voie pour s’adapter ou sur la voie d’une augmentation des niveaux de risque. Cela soulève de nombreux défis, notamment méthodologiques. Dans le sillage de la COP28, cette conférence vise à explorer les outils qualitatifs innovants pour mesurer les progrès d’adaptation, offrant des perspectives complémentaires aux méthodes quantitatives traditionnelles.

Alors que le changement climatique continue de s'accentuer, et que les risques associés deviennent plus intenses et complexes que prévu, le dernier rapport du GIEC a montré que les politiques et les projets d’adaptation au climat sont souvent mal suivis.

Les méthodes d’évaluation basées sur des indicateurs quantitatifs ont été jusqu’à présent prédominantes, mais elles montrent des limites, notamment en ce qui concerne la difficulté d’identifier les données statistiques qui saisissent la nature complexe de l’adaptation (par exemple, au-delà des mesures quantitatives du PIB ou du revenu).

Cet événement vise à présenter des outils qualitatifs innovants pour mesurer l’adaptation basés sur des jugements d’experts structurés : Gap Track (IDDRI), le Système d’évaluation de la résilience (Banque mondiale) et le Diagnostic de la capacité d’adaptation et de résilience des pays (Banque mondiale), sont des contributions majeures pour mieux évaluer les progrès de l’adaptation à différentes échelles.

De tels outils d’évaluation peuvent donc s'avérer essentiels, à la fois pour alimenter l’Objectif mondial d’adaptation (GGA) de la CCNUCC, en particulier le programme de travail biennal sur les indicateurs décidés à la COP28, ainsi que pour les ministères de l’Environnement et tous les partenaires de développement international, dans la perspective du deuxième bilan mondial en 2028.
