Topics and Regions
I am an infectious disease epidemiologist and veterinarian. My research and teaching focus on health at the human-animal-environment interface, following the One Health and Planetary Health conceptual models and using methods such as spatial epidemiology, mathematical models, and methods for drawing causal inference from observational data.
My work has largely focused on endemic zoonoses (diseases transmitted from animals to humans) among livestock keepers in sub-Saharan Africa, however more recently my research has moved into the emerging zoonoses space.
I believe that land and health are strongly connected, however I do not see issues related to land tenure and land rights represented in the public health discourse. I recently published an opinion piece on this issue with Jessica Hernandez (Zapotec and Maya Ch'orti'), Peter Rabinowitz (settler), and Kevin Bardosh (settler) (https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanplh/article/PIIS2542-5196(22)00069-9/fulltext) and I'd welcome further connections with like-minded researchers, activists, and organizations.
