The World Bank is a vital source of financial and technical assistance to developing countries around the world. We are not a bank in the ordinary sense but a unique partnership to reduce poverty and support development. The World Bank Group has two ambitious goals: End extreme poverty within a generation and boost shared prosperity.

  • To end extreme poverty, the Bank's goal is to decrease the percentage of people living on less than $1.25 a day to no more than 3% by 2030.
  • To promote shared prosperity, the goal is to promote income growth of the bottom 40% of the population in each country.

The World Bank Group comprises five institutions managed by their member countries.

The World Bank Group and Land: Working to protect the rights of existing land users and to help secure benefits for smallholder farmers

The World Bank (IBRD and IDA) interacts primarily with governments to increase agricultural productivity, strengthen land tenure policies and improve land governance. More than 90% of the World Bank’s agriculture portfolio focuses on the productivity and access to markets by small holder farmers. Ten percent of our projects focus on the governance of land tenure.

Similarly, investments by the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the World Bank Group’s private sector arm, including those in larger scale enterprises, overwhelmingly support smallholder farmers through improved access to finance, inputs and markets, and as direct suppliers. IFC invests in environmentally and socially sustainable private enterprises in all parts of the value chain (inputs such as irrigation and fertilizers, primary production, processing, transport and storage, traders, and risk management facilities including weather/crop insurance, warehouse financing, etc

августа, 2012

While the leasing arrangement was originally intended to
restore investor confidence and maintain agricultural
development in newly independent Vanuatu, it soon evolved

Emerging Developments and Challenges in the Arab World

августа, 2012

The events of the last few weeks are a
watershed for Tunisia, Egypt, and other Middle East and
North Africa (MENA) countries. The ongoing political events
will resonate regionally and globally and, if followed by
sound transitions to better governance structures, these
events provide a unique opportunity to change MENA's
political and social landscape. The root cause of the
political turmoil in MENA is fatigue with longstanding

Sowing the Seeds of Sustainability : A Case Project with Unifrutti, IFC, and Smallholder Banana Farmers in the Philippines

августа, 2012

Smallholder banana farmers are beginning
to understand that their old farming methods are
contributing to the planet's drying up or suffocating
in fields of garbage. They are convinced that they have to
change their ways for the good of their farms, their
communities, and their children. But what really drives them
to adopt new and sustainable practices? What will ensure
they continue to do so? International Finance Corporation

Arab Donors Respond Favorably to the Global Financial Crisis

августа, 2012

The World Bank's 2010 study, Arab
Development Assistance: four decades of cooperation, showed
that Arab countries have been generous donors over the
years, particularly the three Gulf countries - Kuwait, Saudi
Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) which represent
over 90 percent of total Arab aid provided by those
countries on which information is available. This paper
confirms that the generosity extends to the period of the

Increasing Access to Justice for Women, the Poor, and Those Living in Remote Areas : An Indonesian Case Study

августа, 2012

This briefing note outlines the reform
process that produced these notable results, a process that
began with targeted grassroots empowerment through
engagement with PEKKA, an Indonesian civil society
organization supporting women headed households. Formal
justice sector institutions and local governments
subsequently built on those efforts, with support from
international development agencies. The note will outline
