This Act establishes the Land Administration Authority as a body corporate and provides with respect to its functions and powers and its administration and management. The Authority shall be an agency of the Government of Lesotho responsible for land administration and shall operate under the general supervision of the Minister responsible for land matters.

This Act provides for acquisition of lands by the Government for public purposes. No land shall be acquired by the Government: (a) unless the acquisition of the land or the purpose for which it is to be acquired has been expressly authorized by the Legislature (except for construction of roads).

Under the Act, “settlement” includes “an instrument or instruments which under this Act or the corresponding previous enactments is or are deemed to be or which together constitute a settlement, and a settlement which is deemed to have been made by any person or to be subsisting for the purposes of this Act”, what constitutes a settlement is defined under section 8.

This Act, consisting of 70 sections divided into eight and completed by one Schedule, provides for the management and conservation of pastoral lands in the territory of South Australia.

The present Law enforces the Federal Agricultural Soil Act of 4 October 1991. In particular, the Canton promotes the efforts of the federal government to maintain an efficient agriculture according to the federal rural soil legislation and shall take the necessary measures for its implementation.

The present Law enforces the Federal Land Use Planning Act of 22 June 1976. The purpose of the present Law is to achieve a balanced and economical use of land with a view to the natural living conditions, protection of nature and cultural heritage.

The present Act lays down provisions relating to expropriation proceedings. The Act contains at the outset a definition clause relating to various terms employed therein such as, for example, “Board”, “expropriate”, “expropriating authority”, “injurious affection”, “owner”, registered owner”, “tenant”.

This Law provides for the acquisition of land needed for public purposes and for Companies, and determines the amount of compensation to be made on account of such acquisition. The Collector of the District may make a preliminary investigation on any land in any locality that may be needed for any public purpose or for a Company.
