Fuelwood, deforestation, and land degradation: 10 years of evidence from cebu province, the Philippines
A major development concern of the 1970s and 1980s was 'the other energy' or 'woodfuel crisis'. Woodfuel use in developing regions of Africa, Asia, and Latin America was believed to be a key factor in tropical deforestation, and the loss of forests was projected to result in widespread woodfuel shortages.
Forest fragmentation and regrowth in an institutional mosaic of community, government and private ownership in Nepal
This study analyzes forest change in an area of Nepal that signifies a delicate balance between sustaining the needs and livelihood of a sizable human population dependent on forest products, and an effort to protect important wildlife and other natural resources.
Willingness to Pay for Forest Property Rights and the Value of Increased Property Rights Security
This paper studies the willingness to pay (WTP) for forest property rights in Viet Nam. We do so by asking respondents to estimate the value of two different forest property rights regimes where only the level of property security differs and all other forest plot characteristics are constant. We use this information to identify the value of the property rights security.
impact of land-use change on larval insect communities: Testing the role of habitat elements in conservation
Conservationists have proposed that maintaining key elements of the original land-cover type in modified landscapes may mitigate the detrimental effects of land-cover change on residual species. We tested this hypothesis for aquatic insect communities in tank-forming bromeliads in forested and non-forested habitats in Costa Rica.
Science and conservation in African foreststhe benefits of long-term research
Sustainable supply of wood and fibre: does Malaysia have enough?
Malaysia is the world`s largest exporter of tropical timber (all products), at FOB value of RM21.5 billion in 2005, followed by Indonesia and Brazil.
First Nations, forest lands, and “aboriginal forestry” in Canada: from exclusion to comanagement and beyond
The term “aboriginal forestry” is used increasingly to describe the evolving role of First Nations peoples in Canadian forestry over the last 30 years.
roles of roads and agricultural land use in altering hydrological processes in Nam Mae Rim watershed, northern Thailand
The distributed hydrology soil vegetation model (DHSVM) is applied in the 107 km² Nam Mae Rim watershed (NMRW) in northern Thailand. Simulations using land cover scenarios for 1989 and 2002, extreme deforestation, and forest, each run with and without roads, show that roads have very small effects on the mean water fluxes, but significantly increase peak flows for all land cover scenarios.
Forest land transformation in Latvia: resume of the PhD paper for the scientific degree of Dr.silv. in Forest Economic and Policy
The Promotional Paper Forest Land Transformation in Latvia by Gunta Bāra has been developed at the Forest Faculty of the Latvian University of Agriculture between 2001 and 2007.
Community participation in a social forestry program in Central Java, Indonesia: the effect of incentive structure and social capital
A new social forestry program has been implemented in Java to overcome encroachment of state forests. In this program, the state and local communities jointly manage the state forests and share the benefits of increased forest resource stock and flow as a result of the management.
