En México la madera se considera propiedad del dueño de la tierra. El gobierno solamente es dueño de la madera de los bosques de propiedad Federal o Estatal, por lo que ni el gobierno federal o los gobiernos municipales reciben pagos de regalías o "royalties". Así, México se aparta del esquema de MaPoTs convencional que se observa en otros países, en donde las regalías forestales tienen gran importancia.

The economic contributions of forests in Eastern African countries have not received the desired attention in terms of policy and budgetary allocation needed for sustained growth of these forests. This, among other reasons, has led to the reduction of forest zones and an increase in the import of forest-related products, resulting in dwindling foreign currency reserves.
