In December 1997, FAO hosted a workshop, Pluralism and Sustainable Forestry and Rural Development. to exchange information and experiences and to explore mechanisms, methods and fore for optimizing cooperation among the different groups concerned with the management of forest resources. The workshop was attended by 35 participants representing different organizations (and organizational types, geographic regions and disciplines). The articles in this issue of Unasylva are adaptations of papers presented at that workshop.

La Semaine Forestière Méditerranéenne rassemble une grande diversité d’acteurs pour prendre part à l’un des plus importants forums sur les forêts méditerranéennes d’aujourd’hui. Cet évènement bisannuel facilite la coopération entre la communauté scientifique, les décideurs politiques et d’autres acteurs en proposant une plateforme de dialogue régional commune. Cet évènement souligne également l’importance des forêts méditerranéenne au niveau global et met l’accent sur les défis auxquels ces forêts font face.

The lead article on forestry and food security describes the importance of forestry In the maintenance, improvement or rehabilitation of the productive capacity of agriculture. Following is an article dealing with the threat of acid rain. Finally, it must be kept in mind that the best guardians of forest resources are the people who are the first to benefit from them. Therefore, the efforts of non-governmental organizations should be directed toward helping to increase people's participation in all aspects of forest management. The third article deals with this topic.

L'Afrique contribue pour 7 pour cent seulement aux émissions mondiales de gaz à effet de serre. Soixante-dix pour cent des émissions du continent proviennent du changement d'usage des terres, essentiellement de la déforestation. Par contre, le continent africain est potentiellement le plus exposé aux conséquences négatives des changements climatiques.
