Nurul Islam, a teacher by profession lived in a village called Bhatiyapara located in Chakla Union under Parnchagarh Sadar sub district. A Case Study on Changes in Jolzam Village's Land Rights
Among the Kuki tribes of Manipur, the chieftainship system of land holding is still in practice. This system is subject to highly unequal land and power relations, where land ownership is the exclusive right and prerogative of the chief. Astonishingly, villagers have no rights over land whatsoever. Clearly, the land rights system is still one of great challenges in the Kuki Society.
Case study on Zuimi Community
Introduction
The present Ziumi which I live is like any typical village built on a lovely meadow situatedabout 75 KMs from NH39 and 102 KMs from District Headquarter Senapati. The village is about 727 meters above sea level, with 71 HHs and a population of about 426 approximately as according to the information collected during the PRA exercise in the year 2017 by Rongmei Baptist Association, Nagaland under EED/ BROT project.
Ramrati Devi and Bhoodan land- Bihar
In the Kohbari village at Vinobapuri Tola, located in Barachatty block of Gaya district, there are 35 beneficiaries including 33 women and 2 men who have received their Praman Patra from the Bhoodan Yagna Committee on the 12th of May, 2018. The members of the Musahar community were settled on the land a very long time ago, but have been unable to receive their land titles. Landesa facilitated the distribution of land titles to these families by conducting meetings with the Bhoodan Yagna Committee and Revenue Officials.
Israwati Devi – A land rights’ defender
Trained under the leadership development program of Landesa in Uttar Pradesh; promoting village level leaders for supporting land rights of the poor, especially women.
For the elderly in the village Chittpur, Israwati Devi is a much loved daughter-in-law. For the village’s fellow women, she is a ‘sister’ always ready to guide them. For the young girls, she is an example of a strong and fearless woman. From Panchayat leaders, to block and sub-district officials, many consult her to support in their development initiatives.
Announcing the recipients of the Research Consortium's Inaugural Research Grants
In more than a decade of working on women’s land rights, I have often been asked the question “where is the evidence?” While we have more and more insight into how secure land rights benefit women, men, and communities, the question remains “how to get there?”: we don’t know as much as we should (or would like!) about what works, or does not, to improve land rights for women.
