De land- en tuinbouw ontwikkelt zich in de richting van steeds intensievere en complexere bedrijfssystemen. Vanuit de sector groeit het besef dat de chemische benadering van ziekten en plagen haar grenzen begint te bereiken. Ook de consument verlangt van de producent dat de inzet van chemische middelen gereduceerd wordt en gezocht wordt naar andere, meer duurzame oplossingen.

De landbouwpraktijk op de zuidoostelijke zandgronden heeft geleid tot hoge nitraatgehalten in grondwater en hoge fosfaattoestanden in de bodem. Het mestbeleid wordt daarom steeds verder aangescherpt, wat ten koste kan gaan van gewasopbrengsten en het organische stofgehalte in de bodem. Vandaar de vraag: is het mogelijk landbouwkundige en milieukundige doelen te verenigen?

Meerjarige granen, waaronder Thinopyrum intermedium, wortelen dieper en intensiever en houden daardoor bodem, voedingsstoffen en water goed vast. Voor Nederlandse omstandigheden zou de teelt van dergelijke gewassen dan ook kunnen zorgen voor minder water en/of winderosie, minder milieubelasting (minder uitspoeling) en zuiniger gebruik van inputs.

Het behandelt de vraag in hoeverre klimaatverandering wijzigingen in het bodembeheer noodzakelijk maakt, en welke maatregelen specifiek voor de akkerbouw in de Veenkoloniën geschikt zijn.
