Fuelwood and charcoal continue to be indispensable in cooking the daily meal for most people in sub-Saharan Africa; in addition, wood as a fuel represents an important source of income. Pressure on forest resources as well as health hazards through indoor air pollution have resulted in more calls for switching to alternative energy sources.

A sourcebook and survey modules are being developed by five bodies (FAO, CIFOR, IFRI, the World Bank's LSMS and PROFOR) to collect data on the socioeconomic contributions of forests to household welfare and livelihoods at aggregate scales. The modules have been field-tested in three countries.
Located in the Keserwan-Jbeil region of Lebanon, the Jabal Moussa Biosphere Reserve (N 34º 03’ 43.93”, E 35º 46’ 09.84”) is bordered by the Nahr Ibrahim river to the north and the Nahr el Dahab river to the south. The area of the reserve is approximately 6 500 ha large and the range of altitudes (350 to 1 600 m) is responsible for a wide variety of habitats.
