This Act amends the Sugar Industry Efficiency Act 2001 in various sections relating to, among other things: definitions, conversion of land in case of sale of land to the Government, ensuring the quality of sugar products produced under this Act (and quality control including HACCP), other matters regrading conversion of agricultural land in land used for other purposes. This Act also established a Sugar Cane Sustainability Fund (for the purposes of fostering the production of sugar cane and bagasse) and requires the Mauritius Cane Industry Authority to develop a Renewable Sugar Cane Industry Based Biomass Framework (to promote production of energy from biomass, including sugar cane, cane trash, high fibre cane, fuel canes, gramineae and other related biomass, generated by the sugar cane industry), a Sugar Based Agro-Industry Framework (to promote sugar-based agroindustry and to generate value added sugar or other sugar products through the use of local raw materials, including those specified in the Tenth Schedule), and an Ethanol and Molasses Framework (to provide value addition from ethanol obtained from molasses or from any other raw material obtained from sugar cane).
