Factors driving the demand for livestock products in the developing countries are primarily population growth, urbanisation and income growth. These factors are expected to continue to fuel the increase in milk and meat consumption in the next millennium, creating a veritable livestock revolution.

This study produces a set of maps and tables that locate significant populations of poor livestock keepers and has broadly assessed how poor livestock keeping populations are likely to change over the next 3-5 decades. The outputs of the study are based on innovative analysis using new global data sets.

This document presents the proceedings of the international conference held at the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, April 24-26, 2002.

This conference proceeding is divided in four major sessions, viz, regional overviews; technology and adoption processes; markets and smallholder participation; and food safety and quality quality. The overviews include ILRI, HOPEA (a regional small scale start-up project for household poultry enterprises in Asia); SEARCAR & D programme; Asia-Pacific region and other global studies.

The Borana rangelands of southern Ethiopia are characterised by extensive livestock production in response to the area?s natural characteristics - aggregate mean rainfall ranges between 300 and 900 mm per annum with high seasonal and inter-annual variability.
