The increasing demand for land and natural resources brings diverse users into competition. There is a clear need to secure legitimate rights and develop effective processes to resolve disputes without conflicts. Natural resources degradation, which is an increasing challenge in many Feed the Future regions, can be addressed by integrating environmental management practices that boost agricultural productivity, increase incomes and enhance resilience to drought and other environmental shocks.

Cambodian farmers sue Thai sugar group Mitr Phol over alleged land grab

Farmers from Cambodia have filed a lawsuit in a Thai civil court against Asia’s largest sugar producer, accusing it of rights abuses after it allegedly kicked farmers off their land, a rights group said on Monday.

The lawsuit, filed on behalf of 3,000 people, is the first class-action lawsuit filed in a Thai court by plaintiffs from another country against a Thai company operating outside Thailand, the group, Inclusive Development International, said in a statement.

Updated Myanmar Guidebook on Customary Tenure Documentation Now Available

Mekong Region Land Governance launches an updated guidebook for documenting customary tenure in Myanmar on 9 March in Yangon. 


This second edition of “Documenting Customary in Myanmar: A Guidebook” includes:


  • an introduction to customary tenure concepts and principles,
  • an overview of legal issues and challenges to claiming customary tenure under Myanmer’s current legal framework; and
  • practical tools and resources to help people document their own customary claims.

Maharashtra: Dalit Woman Farmers In Marathwada Are Fighting For Land Ownership Rights

The Marathwada region of Maharashtra is known for its drought-stricken conditions. Farmer suicides have been on the rise and families of the farmers are always on the fear that they would be losing their loved ones to the drought.

To add to plight, if the farmer belongs to the Dalit community, the struggles of the individual are more pronounced. The story of Kantabai Ichake entails similar struggles – a 70-year-old Dalit woman who is among many who have spearheaded the fight of Dalit women across Marathwada.

Security tightened after illegal miners attack government posts in the Amazon

Indigenous groups warn Paris accord imperiled by deforestation

Indigenous leaders and forestry experts warned on Tuesday that without more funding and protection for forests and their peoples, the world will fail to meet the ambitious goals set by the Paris Agreement.

 

In "a declaration of the guardians of the forest," the coalition of  called on countries to help stop the killing of its leaders, ensure legal recognition of their lands and designate environmental degradation a crime against humanity.
