Aquatic genetic resources (AqGR) play a crucial role in contributing to global food security and nutrition, as well as sustainable livelihoods. However, in various international fora, most FAO members have highlighted the limitations and constraints faced in assessing their national capacities to use, manage and conserve AqGR as well as in identifying and monitoring the resources used and the suitable indicators of the status of those resources.

AquaCrop, the crop water productivity model

Institutional & promotional materials
December, 2016

AquaCrop is a crop water productivity model developed by FAO to improve water productivity in rainfed and irrigated fields. It simulates yield response to water of herbaceous crops and is particularly suited to address conditions where water is a key limiting factor in crop production. AquaCrop was developed in 2009 and since then it has been used worldwide in different agro-ecological conditions.

Commonisation and decommonisation: Understanding the processes of change in the Chilika Lagoon, India

Journal Articles & Books
December, 2011
India
Asia

This article examines the processes of change in a large lagoon system, and its implications for how commons can be managed as commons in the long run. We use two related concepts in our analysis of change: commonisation and decommonisation; commonisation is understood as a process through which a resource gets converted into a jointly used resource under commons institutions that deal with excludability and subtractability, and decommonisation refers to a process through which a jointly used resource under commons institutions loses these essential characteristics.

Increased development pressures on the marine environment and the potential for multiple use conflicts, arising as a result of the current expansion of offshore wind energy, fishing and aquaculture, dredging, mineral extraction, shipping, and the need to meet international and national commitments to biodiversity conservation, have led to increased interest in sea use planning with particular emphasis on marine spatial planning.
