Community Stewardship: Adding a Community Angle to PES Markets

May, 2024
India
Kenya
The session examined the dynamics of Payments for Ecosystem Services (PES) markets, with a focus on integrating community perspectives into the voluntary carbon market (VCM), particularly in the context of REDD+ initiatives. Recent years have seen a surge in PES, driven by net-zero goals and market opportunities, but concerns have emerged over carbon colonialism, as millions of hectares in the Global South, often inhabited by Indigenous Peoples and local communities, become targets for carbon sequestration due to low costs and insecure tenure.

Advancing Land-Based Investment Governance: Scaling Up Multi-Actor and Multi-Prong Engagement

May, 2024
The session focused on advancing responsible land-based investment (RLBI) governance through a comprehensive, multi-actor, and multi-pronged approach. Discussions centered on the ALIGN Technical Support Facility’s efforts to foster effective governance frameworks, emphasizing the importance of political economy considerations in navigating complex land governance contexts. Emerging pressures, such as climate change and the need for a just transition, were highlighted as key factors influencing land-based investment decisions.

Brownfields to Green Energy: How Land Repurposing Supports Climate Action

May, 2024
Bosnia and Herzegovina
India
Poland
The session examined the repurposing of brownfields as a strategic solution to support the global shift from coal to renewable energy, highlighting its importance in addressing land scarcity for sustainable development. The discussion emphasized the need for large land areas as the world transitions to renewable energy, contrasting this with the lower land requirements of traditional fossil fuels.

Contribution of Customary Land Tenure to Sustainable Forest Landscape Restoration (FLR)

May, 2024
Madagascar
Cameroon
Ethiopia
The session explored the critical role of customary land tenure in advancing sustainable Forest Landscape Restoration (FLR), emphasizing its importance for community-driven conservation efforts. The discussion began with a keynote presentation by Anne Larson, who presented CIFOR's research on how secure land tenure can mobilize effective communal interventions in FLR, drawing on case studies from Madagascar and Cameroon. This presentation highlighted the link between land tenure security and improved livelihoods through sustainable forest management. Dr.

How Community Forestry Can Strengthen Sustainable Landscape Management and Land Tenure Security

May, 2024
Indonesia
Brazil
Democratic Republic of the Congo
The session focused on the potential of community forestry to enhance sustainable landscape management and strengthen land tenure security, using case studies from Indonesia, Brazil, and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Community forestry was framed as a method that allows local populations to manage forest resources, contributing to environmental conservation, income generation, and improved governance.

Unlocking Resilience: Integrated Approach to Climate Adaptation and Disaster Risk Reduction

May, 2024
The session examined the integration of Climate Change Adaptation (CCA) and Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) strategies, emphasizing the importance of a holistic approach to enhance resilience in communities vulnerable to climate-related challenges such as floods and droughts. The discussion opened with welcoming remarks that set the stage for understanding the interconnected nature of CCA and DRR in the context of increasing climate variability.

Policies to Secure Land Tenure in Land-Intensive Climate Action

May, 2024
The session examined the policy landscape necessary to secure land tenure in the context of land-intensive climate action, addressing the rising global demand for land driven by renewable energy projects and biological carbon removal commitments. The discussion acknowledged the historical impact of large-scale land acquisitions (LSLAs) in the Global South, which often resulted in adverse socioeconomic consequences and human rights violations, emphasizing the need to avoid similar pitfalls as land demands shift toward climate mitigation efforts.

May, 2024
Vietnam
Nicaragua
Guatemala
Asia
The session explored the intersection of Indigenous Peoples' and Local Communities' tenure rights, livelihoods, and conservation, emphasizing the importance of rights-based approaches (RBAs) in achieving sustainable development and conservation outcomes. The discussion began with a global review by CIFOR-ICRAF on the implementation of RBAs in development and climate action projects, identifying critical success factors and challenges, alongside a set of recommendations for improving project design and execution.
