The Human Right to Land: Do we need Human Rights based Land Governance and what could it deliver?

The session co-organised by TMG research and the Danish Institute of Human Rights looked at the interlinkages between responsible land governance and human rights. Participants discussed critical questions such as: can a more explicit embedding of land rights work in Human Rights correct overly simplistic, technical framings? Can it reaffirm the legally binding human rights foundation of voluntary responsible land governance (i.e. the VGGT)?

The state of Pernambuco and 4 other states in the northeastern region of Brazil have been devastated by heavy rains since the beginning of this week. Some municipalities of the Metropolitan Region of Recife, as well as some municipalities of the Zona da Mata were extremely affected, mainly the populations living in poverty, victims of the environmental racism that divides the territory leaving the most dangerous areas for black and non-white populations.

Hosted Under the Patronage of His Majesty King Abdullah IIBin Al Hussein, the Global Land Forum focused on "Pathways to Climate Solutions"

The Forum is the first of its kind in the Middle East and North Africa, taking place in the Dead Sea at the King Hussein Bin Talal Convention Centre. More than 800 participants, speakers, and experts representing 78 countries came together to discuss critical issues related to climate change, land rights, food systems and other topics.

This episode of LandUP! addresses an often overlooked topic by discussing the land rights of widowed women. Widowed women face vastly different hurdles and challenges when it comes to accessing land and this moment of their lives is worth exploring. With this in mind, we spoke to human rights lawyer Faith Alubbe, land economist Nana Ama Yirrah and Mokoro Principal Consultant and Land Portal Board Member Dr. Elizabeth Daley about widowhood and how women's land rights are often tied to a man's, with a specific focus on Africa.
