Jose Domingo Ulcue Collazos was on his motorcycle when he was shot.

An indigenous teacher, Jose Domingo Ulcue Collazo was killed Monday night in the town of Santander de Quilichao in the department of Cauca, Colombia. His death makes him the 173rd social leader killed in Latin America in 2018.

Social organizations reported that the killing occurred between 4:30 pm and 8:00 pm local time while Ulcue was commuting on his motorcycle. 

The suspects shot Ulcue in the chest, he was later transported to the Francisco de Paula Santander hospital where he died.

“We arrived to La Guajira to defend our sovereignty from the corrupt who call themselves defenders of Mother Earth that only hinder the country’s progress."

A Colombian paramilitary group known as the ‘Aguilas Negras’ (Black Eagles) spread pamphlets in the northern Guajira department threatening human rights defenders and Indigenous organizations working in the region.

“Our path continues, and the main difference with previous phases is that now we’re more original peoples walking together."

RIO DE JANEIRO, Oct 5 (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - A record number of indigenous candidates are running for federal and state offices in Brazil's elections on Sunday, a trend campaigners hope will shine a spotlight on the lack of land rights for the country's indigenous population.

Organizations claim the reform would legalize lands illegally seized from Indigenous, Campesino and Afro-Colombian communities.

The National Indigenous Organization of Colombia (ONIC) demanded the Tribunal of Bogota to halt a proposed reform bill on the Law of Land and to “protect the fundamental right to territory and previous consultation for indigenous people.”
