The 2012 World Development Report on Gender Equality and Development finds that women's lives around the world have improved dramatically, but gaps remain in many areas. The authors use a conceptual framework to examine progress to date, and then recommend policy actions.

One of the key messages of the report is that:

Abstract
The persistent interplay of food production problems, land
degradation, and social and climatic difficulties on the Horn of
Africa result in recurring famines in spite of vast sums of money
spent on agricultural development. As land resources--which
undergird both social and production systems in Africa--become
increasingly degraded, development efforts, especially in
problematic areas, need to become part of comprehensive resource
use programs that take into account the existing regional land

This lesson brief explores the multiple independent phenomena that affect relationships between farmers and herders, as well as the nature of their conflicts over natural resources in Mali. It is part of the Focus on Land in Africa: Land Tenure and Property Rights online educational tool.

[From AWID]  We, the Women’s Major Group representatives* at the Asia Pacific Regional Preparatory Meeting for Rio+20 call on governments to reaffirm their commitments to Agenda 21 and the Beijing Platform for Action, and fulfill their obligations to the Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) and the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights. 

The State of the World's Land and Water Resources for Food and Agriculture (SOLAW) analyses a variety of options for overcoming constraints and improving resource management in these areas of heightened risk. In each location, a mix of changes in institutional and policy measures will have to be combined with greater access to technologies for better management of land and water resources.

Just a couple weeks ago,  Iowa State University (ISU) withdrew from advising the Iowa-based firm AgriSol Energy on itsplanned land deal in Tanzania.

Sida have supported a technical assistance to 1997. The fi rst stage of this assistance has been successfully completed in 2001. According to Sida’s decision from 2001-11-05 the technical assistance was extended through the project Cadastre Project – Fiscal Cadastre and Training”. gives recommendations for a possible continuation of Sida’s support. Most of the planned project activities were completed at the time for our evaluation.

Investment in land is not conflict-neutral, and given the history of violent conflict and mutual destabilization in the Horn of Africa there is potential for localized political grievances to turn into wider regional conflict. There is significant foreign investment in land in Ethiopia by parties from Africa and further afield. This is primarily geared towards producing for the export market, and is often concentrated in regions with limited political influence.
