About eighteen lines of red peppers were collected in various parts of Okinawa prefecture; they were classified into three species: Capsicum annuum, C. frutescens, and C. baccatum, according to the color of the corolla, spots at the corolla base, the color of the anther, and the fruit characteristics, among others. C. baccatum has spots at the corolla base, and its anther is yellow. This pepper has not been previously reported as a sulture example in Japan. C. annuum has a white corolla and a purulish-blue anther, while C. frutescens has a light-green corolla and a purplish-blue anther. The division of the eighteen lines into categories was carried out using nine (I-IX) types, in terms of the fruit characteristics. Type I was C. baccatum, types II-VII were C. annuum, and types VIII-IX were C. frutescens; thus, C. annuum, has a greater variety of type of fruit.
