The Act, consisting of five Sections, establishes that the Parliament, on behalf of the people of Australia, recognises that the continent and the islands now known as Australia were first occupied by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and so respects the continuing cultures, languages and heritage of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. In addition, it states that the Minister must cause a review of support for a referendum to amend the Constitution to commence within 12 months after the enactment of this Act. It is divided as follows: Short title (I); Commencement (II); Recognition (III); Review of support for a referendum to amend the Constitution (IV); Sunset provision (V).
