Knowledge management (KM) and learning are at the heart of the LAND-at-scale programme. The Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) in partnership with a broad scala of knowledge partners including LANDac, Royal Tropical Intitute (KIT), the International Land Coalition (ILC), Land Portal and many more will collaborate to implement the knowledge management (KM) component of the program. 

Through LAND-at-scale's country-projects, the aim is to achieve just, inclusive and sustainable land governance at scale and in a sustainable way. With an integrated KM-strategy, LAND-at-scale aims to achieve maximum impact of each project, as well as contribute to gaining a deeper understanding of the conditions required to create structural change. Exchanges across partners is a core element of the strategy, but also linking them to academic partners to fill in knowledge gaps and uncover more along the way.

Challenges with regards to scaling is not unique to the land sector. Working in the context of agriculture for development, CGIAR and Wageningen University developed the Scaling Readiness approach.  This approach response to the fact that the pressure to demonstrate fast and visible results and impact at scale, has sometimes resulted in unreasonable and unrealistic expectations, and in fact stimulated simplistic and non-sustainable scaling approaches.

LAND-at-scale (LAS) is a land governance support program for developing countries from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands, which was launched in 2019. The objective of the program is to directly strengthen essential land governance components for men, women and youth that have the potential to contribute to structural, just, sustainable and inclusive change at scale in lower- and middle-income countries/regions/landscapes.

Considering the challenges of conflict management, mediation, and dispute resolution in numerous countries, several LAND-at-scale (LAS) interventions aim to strengthen and improve access to institutions of dispute resolution. Recent LAS interventions build on previous efforts since 2002 by the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs to strengthen land tenure security, increasingly recognising durable and equitable solutions, especially for marginalised people.

The context of Nyanza-Lac is both complex and interesting for researching land issues. It has a very high population density (more than 50% of the whole population of Makamba Province lives in Nyanza-Lac) and attracts flows of intra- and interregional migrants in search of fertile land and income-generating opportunities in the area.
