PBL Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency
Mission
PBL (Planbureau voor de Leefomgeving) Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency (previously known as "Milieu- en Natuur planbureau") is the national institute for strategic policy analysis in the fields of the environment, nature and spatial planning.
We contribute to improving the quality of political and administrative decision-making by conducting outlook studies, analyses and evaluations in which an integrated approach is considered paramount. Policy relevance is the prime concern in all of our studies. We conduct solicited and unsolicited research that is independent and scientifically sound.
Independent
PBL is an autonomous research institute in the fields of the environment, nature and spatial planning. It is part of the Dutch Government organisation; more specifically, the Ministry of Infrastructure. Public Works and Water Management.
Other government departments may also ask PBL to conduct research into issues related to the environment, nature and spatial planning – in particular the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy, the Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations, the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The independence of PBL and its partner agencies CPB Netherlands Bureau for Economic Policy Analysis and the Netherlands Institute for Social Research (SCP) is safeguarded in the Protocol for the Policy Assessment Agencies (Aanwijzingen voor de Planbureaus), Staatscourant (government gazette) 3200, 21 February 2012.
Professor Hans Mommaas is the Director-General of PBL Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency.
Core tasks
The core tasks of PBL are:
- to investigate and document current environmental, ecological and spatial quality and to evaluate policy;
- to explore future social trends that influence environmental, ecological and spatial quality and to evaluate possible policy options;
- to identify social issues of importance to environmental, ecological and spatial quality and raise them for discussion;
- to identify possible strategic options for achieving government objectives in the fields of the environment, nature and spatial planning.
History
PBL Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency was established in 2008 when the Netherlands Institute for Spatial Research (RPB) merged with the Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency (MNP). The merger came about as part of the Government Reform (Vernieuwing van de Rijksdienst) programme, which resulted in the activities of RPB and MNP being transferred to PBL.
Peace Research Institute Oslo
The Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO) conducts research on the conditions for peaceful relations between states, groups and people.
Researchers at PRIO seek to understand the processes that bring societies together or split them apart. We explore how conflicts erupt and how they can be resolved; we investigate how different kinds of violence affect people; and we examine how societies tackle crises – and the threat of crisis. We document general trends, seek to understand processes, and inform concrete responses.
PRIO is committed to academic excellence. We aim to develop theoretical insights, refine research methodologies, and communicate our findings widely. We see this academic excellence as paramount to having a meaningful impact on society.
Research at PRIO is financed on a project basis by a range of scientific and policy-oriented funders. The institute is an independent foundation, international in its orientation, with an extensive network of collaborators worldwide.
Peace Way Foundation
The Peace Way Foundation was formed in February 2002. It operates as an umbrella organisation, under which is a project called Burma Issues. BI has operated since 1990. The formation of the Peace Way Foundation allowed us to be a recognised and registered organisation with the Thai Government. By becoming a Foundation our organisation has obtained legal status and ensured greater security for the work we do. One of the aims in forming the Foundation was also to allow us to expand our work and our ideology into other areas and countries, not to be secular in our work, but to strive to help build a global grassroots movement.
The organisation was initially founded in 1990 and acts as a private, non-profit organisation devoted to a peaceful resolution to Burma's struggle for human rights and democratic rule. We are non-partisan and do not advocate, campaign for or represent any leaders, political parties or ideologies as solutions to Burma's civil strife.
The Peaceway Foundation is unique in that we focus on the marginalised communities living in the war zones of Burma as the target group for building a peace based on justice for everyone. Our approach is based on concepts of community organising and empowerment of these marginalised communities. We are firmly committed to nonviolent forms of peacemaking and conflict transformation.
As of the year 2002, Burma has suffered more than fifty years of armed conflict and forty years of one-party military rule. Despite growing international awareness of human rights abuses throughout the country, the resolution of Burma's conflicts and the strengthening of its democratic civil society will be a long-term struggle. This struggle must be nurtured and led by the people of Burma themselves, and international support for political change only will not help address the social and cultural aspects of the conflict.
The civil war has disrupted the lives of people all over the country, but has had an especially devastating effect on people living in the distant rural areas which lie along the border lines between Burma and its neighbours. These people are isolated from the rest of the country with little or no access to information and no chance to participate in the political and economic life of the country. They have little opportunity for education, health care, jobs, and adequate food supplies.
The Peaceway Foundation believes that the civil war in Burma is caused by chauvinism that can be found in all levels of society and among all groups. Chauvinism is an attitude or belief that an individual or specific group has the right to dominate another individual or group with the purpose of dividing the people, preventing their solidarity and fomenting discrimination and mistrust. This chauvinism feeds the forces of militarism and perpetuates violence in all areas of society including ethnicity, religion and gender.

Phuhlisani NPC
Phuhlisani began as a consultancy started by a group of people who wanted to support emerging farmers who obtained access to land through land reform programmes in South Africa. In 2015, after 12 years in operation as a Closed Corporation, the members of the company decided to convert Phuhlisani to a Non-Profit Company which took place in October 2015.
Phuhlisani NPC provides comprehensive services and support for sustainable land reform and rural development including:
- Research and strategy development at national, provincial district and local scales.
-
Providing development facilitation and conflict resolution services in complex and contested development settings.
-
Providing individual project planning and implementation support.
-
Supporting rights determination, strengthening land holding institutions and helping develop functional land rights management systems.
-
Developing and strengthening associations representing people acquiring land through the land reform programme.
-
Designing comprehensive capacity development strategies and materials.
-
Facilitating learning process approaches within institutions and across development programmes.
-
Market scoping, agricultural enterprise development and joint venture formation.
Phuhlisani has adopted a trans-disciplinary approach to its work. This involves breaking down the boundaries between so called hard and soft skills, specialist and local knowledge.
The organization believes that this helps to identify solutions which are socially, economically and ecologically sustainable in a context where land and agrarian reform, the promotion of sustainable livelihoods and pro poor rural development take place within an increasingly complex and contested national and international environment.

Pikara Magazine
Plan International CIDSE-Laos
Founded in 1937, Plan International is a development and humanitarian organisation that advances children’s rights and equality for girls. We strive for a just world, working together with children, young people, our supporters and partners.
OUR PURPOSE
We strive for a just world that advances children’s rights and equality for girls.
We engage people and partners to:
- Empower children, young people and communities to make vital changes that tackle the root causes of discrimination against girls, exclusion and vulnerability.
- Drive change in practice and policy at local, national and global levels through our reach, experience and knowledge of the realities children face.
- Work with children and communities to prepare for and respond to crises and to overcome adversity.
- Support the safe and successful progression of children from birth to adulthood.
HOW WE WORK
We see clear links between fulfilling children’s rights, achieving gender equality and ending child poverty. Every girl and boy has the right to be healthy, educated, protected, valued and respected in their own community and beyond.
We support these rights from when children are born to when they reach adulthood. We work to ensure that girls and boys know their rights, and have the skills, knowledge and confidence to fulfil them. This approach inspires and empowers children and communities to create long-lasting change.
Our programmes operate at multiple levels to advance children’s rights and tackle the root causes of discrimination, exclusion and vulnerability across 8 key areas:
- Education
- Water and sanitation
- Sexual and reproductive health
- Early childhood care and development
- Disaster risk management
- Economic security
- Child protection
- Child participation.
As part of this ongoing programming, we work during and after natural disasters, emergencies and conflicts to enable children to prepare for and respond to crises and adversity.
Our global advocacy work not only focuses on international policy but also ensures national governments can meaningfully implement and uphold laws that advance children’s rights and gender equality at community level.

Plataforma Agraria
