This paper presents a critical review of conceptual and methodological approaches that support territorial analysis and environmental management developed by the institutions responsible for the research and management of environmental problems in the country and on a regional level, such as: Ministry of Environment, Housing and Territorial Development, Agustin Codazzi Geographic Institute and Regional Environmental Corporation of Risaralda, this last one included for being one of the most important public environmental regional authorities. This critical review is particularly useful since it allows, from the positive aspects and the explanation of theoretical and methodological limitations of traditional approaches used by those institutions, to draw a complementary academic perspective of territorial analysis and environmental management based on geography and the interdisciplinary input from anthropology, sociology, psychology, economics, etc.., which serves to overcome the functionalist, physical, organic and ecological approaches associated with institutional proposals.
