The nexus across water, energy and food (WEF): learning from research, building on evidence, strengthening practice

December, 2022
Global

While water-energy-food (WEF) Nexus is one of the most important, and widely investigated, environmental topics of our time, previous stock taking efforts possess notable limitations, namely (i) their focus is restricted to research articles, and (ii) there is less focus on nexus permutations that begin with energy and food. This paper assembled more than 900 documents and systematically categorized them according to more than 10 key parameters (e.g. scale, methods, limitations), to characterize approaches, achieved outcomes and presence of variables likely to support on-the-ground change.

Polycentric LocAl Led Climate AdapTation ChampION (ACTION) to build resilience to droughts in Hanzila Village, Southern Zambia

December, 2022
Global

As part of the "ClimBeR: Building Systemic Resilience Against Climate Variability and Extremes" initiative, the Zambia spotlight developed a case study on "Water Access and Management in Community-based Water Tenure" in two rural communities of Zambia.

Water accounting under climate change in the transboundary Volta River Basin with a spatially calibrated hydrological model

December, 2022
Global

Sustainable water management requires evidence-based information on the current and future states of water resources. This study presents a comprehensive modelling framework that integrates the fully distributed mesoscale Hydrologic Model (mHM) and climate change scenarios with the Water Accounting Plus (WA+) tool to anticipate future water resource challenges and provide mitigation measures in the transboundary Volta River basin (VRB) in West Africa. The mHM model is forced with a large ensemble of climate change projection data from CORDEX-Africa.

CGIAR Research Program on Policies, Institutions, and Markets - Plan of Work and Budget 2020

December, 2019
France

In 2019 PIM completed the participatory priority-setting exercise started in 2018 to update the priorities for the program’s final 2019-2021 period. As a conclusion of this exercise, the framework of the Phase 2 proposal as well as the flagships’ impact pathways were reaffirmed as highly relevant.

Village Midline Study: Rupandehi, Nepal

December, 2019
Nepal

This report presents the findings from the village midline study conducted in Madhuri Village, the CCAFS benchmark site of Rupandehi district, Nepal between the 26th and the 30th of May 2019 . This document reports on the various changes which have occurred since the baseline was conducted in the same village. Changes in agricultural practices, sources of information, organizational and institutional development, climate change adaptation practices, and networks present in the community are assessed.

Incentives for landscape restoration: Lessons from Shinyanga, Tanzania

December, 2020
Global

Owing to high rates of land and forest degradation, there is consensus that forest landscape restoration is a global priority with the Bonn Challenge and the New York Declaration on Forests committing to restore about 350 Million hectares by 2030, globally. However, there is a need for incentives that motivate these restoration efforts and disincentives aimed at restricting activities that result in further land degradation.

Case Study: Investment in sustainable seeds for sustainable agricultural intensification

December, 2020
Sri Lanka

This study estimates that Sustainable Seeds Systems for the Global South received approximately USD 15 billion in funding cumulatively between 2010-2019 across all sources of funders. This is roughly one-third the total funding for seeds innovation in the same time period. Though the trend should get confirmed with further data, the analysis made in this study reveals a slight decline in the trend for investments in sustainable seeds innovation over the last 2-3 years for which data was available.

Understanding and influencing agency and behaviour change in Kenya

December, 2022
Kenya

This country brief is part of the outputs for Work Package 5 of the CGIAR Initiative on Agroecology. The focus of Work Package 5 is understanding and then influencing individual and collective agency and behavior among food system actors (FSAs) to drive inclusive and equitable agroecological transformation. Through learning from past experiences relevant to agroecological transformation, this country brief aims to inform the development of the Agroecological Living Landscapes (ALL) and the approach to the Agroecology Initiative’s (AE-I's) activities in Kenya.

Review of Nationally Determined Contributions (NCD) of China from the perspective of food systems

December, 2022
China

China is the largest emitter of greenhouse gases (GHG) and one of the countries most affected by climate change. China's food systems are a major contributor to climate change: in 2018, China's food systems emitted 1.09 billion tons of carbondioxide equivalent (CO2eq) GHGs, accounting for 8.2% of total national GHG emissions and 2% of global emissions.

The link between small reservoir infrastructure and farmer-led irrigation: case study of Ogun Watershed in southwestern Nigeria

December, 2022
Nigeria

Small water infrastructure in Nigeria needs to be utilized more efficiently. There are over 900 small reservoirs across the country. Many of these have yet to be put to productive use within the Ogun watershed in the Ogun Osun River Basin. This study investigates the challenges and opportunities for improving the use of small reservoirs for farmer-led irrigation in a sustainable way.

Towards sustainable food crop production: Drivers of shift from crop production to mining activities in Ghana's arable lands

December, 2023
Ghana

This study contributes to the observed reduction of arable lands discourse by examining the shift in land use patterns as well as factors influencing farmers' shift from crop production to mining activities. To achieve this, we employed a combination of Geographic Information System (GIS) technology and Cragg's Double Hurdle Econometric Model as analytical tools. Our approach integrates an econometric model of land use with GIS simulations that predict the spatial pattern of land-use change.

Agroecological Initiative Project. Individual report on vision to action for Senegal

December, 2022
Senegal

The aim of this report is to analyse the methods and results obtained in relation to the visioning, development of transition pathways and work plans at the ALL in the department of Fatick in Senegal. The latter was chosen because it corresponds to the scale of action of the DYTAEL on the one hand, but also because it was the cradle of the activities of an EU Desira project, called FAIRSAHEL, which has made it possible since the end of 2021 to consolidate thinking on the AE transition in the territory.
