Background
The social science and agribusiness research program at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) has supported the Institute’s research and delivery efforts since 1967. This Compendium highlights the main achievements of IITA’s social science and agribusiness research over the 55 years from 1967 to 2022.
Methodology

The EiA 2030 Initiative aims to deliver agronomic gain at scale for sustainable intensification of smallholder farming systems in the global south, co-created by CGIAR centers and strategic scaling partners from the public and private sectors. The Cereal-Legume Agronomy Scaling and Acceleration Platform (GH-CerLeg-GAIP) initiative of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) Workshop was organized for the EiA 2030 Northern Ghana Soybean and Maize Agronomy Platform in Tamale on 15-17 August 2023 at Mariam Hotel, Tamale.

The Gender Equality Initiative (HER+) conducts innovative gender and social science research to develop actionable solutions to enhance climate resilience and empowerment of women in Africa and Asia. As one-size-fits-all solutions do not exist, HER+ identifies and develops diverse scenarios for co-creation of bundling socio-technical innovations. In Ethiopia, the initiative is closely working with the Veggies for Planet and People (V4P&P) project implemented by the World Vegetable

Throughout history, the practices of livestock husbandry have been evolving with the aim of improving animal production to meet the changing needs and preferences of consumers. Among these practices, breeding has played a significant role in achieving the above-mentioned objectives. Breeding involves the selection of animals with the best traits, intending to preserve and improve desirable and heritable qualities in the next generations.

Actinorhizal symbiosis naturally harbours beneficial categories of diverse plant growth promoting microorganisms (PGPMs), including the Frankia species. The beneficial microorganisms can be used as efficient, non-chemical and sustainable alternatives for adopting effective soil restoration programmes and revegetation schedules in chemical and industrial-contaminated sites, including treating degraded lands contaminated with toxic chemicals and pesticides.

Cattle ranching is a productive activity that generates high amounts of greenhouse gases (GHG) such as methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O) and carbon dioxide (CO2), but can also provide effective alternatives to mitigate and adapt to climate change. Within the livestock sector, silvopastoral systems (SPS) have the capacity to reduce GHG emissions, increase carbon stocks, adapt to climate change, improve animal welfare and increase production of milk, beef and timber under different conditions.

WRF es usado para la generación del pronóstico meteorológico de 24 horas y 5 días.

In India, farmer producer organizations (FPOs) promote collective action among small and marginalized farmers, especially women. By facilitating resource pooling and coordination of production activities, improving market access, and providing training and extension, FPOs can contribute to higher agricultural incomes for smallholder farmers. Women’s FPOs also help formalize women’s roles in agriculture, offer them remunerative employment, and enhance their engagement across the value chain.

The Gender Equality Initiative (HER+) Work Package 2 (WP 2) - EMPOWER targets to co-identify and model diverse scenarios for bundling climate-smart technologies to empower women, men and youths to be partners and drivers of climate change solutions. HER+ WP2 aims to integrate social innovations in existing Ukama Ustawi initiative (UU) sites or what we are calling learning labs to contribute to climate change resilience and women’s empowerment.
