70 лет FAO (1945-2015)

Journal Articles & Books
December, 2014

The integration of food into urban planning is a crucial and emerging topic. Urban planners, alongside the local and regional authorities that have traditionally been less engaged in food-related issues, are now asked to take a central and active part in understanding the way food is produced, processed, packaged, transported, marketed, consumed, disposed of and recycled in our cities.

Canada has long been an active and generous resource partner, working closely with FAO in support of a wide range of shared food security and agricultural development goals. Mutual priority themes include child and maternal nutrition, land tenure and resilience building – with much of Canada’s recent cooperation with FAO having been in response to emergencies where host governments have prioritized FAO’s recovery projects. Canadian expertise and staffing resources are also an important asset for FAO.

Angola and FAO have engaged in close cooperation since the country joined the Organization in

1977. Owing to the 27-year civil war, early FAO interventions were focused on emergency assistance,

including resettling of vulnerable rural households and the provision of agricultural inputs for the

rapid resumption of food production. There has since been a shift towards recovery and longer-term

development goals, including assistance in the formulation and implementation of projects in line with

Accessibility to clean and sufficient water resources for agriculture is key in feeding the steadily increasing world population in a sustainable manner. Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) offer a promising contribution to enhance availability and quality of water for productive purposes and human consumption, while simultaneously striving to preserve the integrity and intrinsic value of the ecosystems. Implementing successful NBS for water management, however, is not an easy task since many ecosystems are already severely degraded, and exploited beyond their regenerative capacity.

Sierra Leone

FAO has been operational in Sierra Leone since 1978. Since then, targeted interventions have greatly helped to improve

food security and agricultural practices in the country. Today, FAO continues to be an important provider of technical

support, in collaboration with other UN agencies, NGOs, civil society and rural communities. Current cooperation efforts

focus on eliminating hunger, improving food security and nutrition and achieving sustainable agriculture through

improved farming methods as well as environmental protection.

Since Comoros joined the Organization in 1977, a variety of interventions have been delivered across the food and agriculture sector. Assistance has included capacity building, institutional strengthening and policy formulation as well as direct support to development projects. Current cooperation efforts are geared towards increasing agricultural production, particularly food products, and protecting natural resources – with an emphasis on agroforestry development. Strengthening agricultural data collection and information systems is another priority area.
