The Land Portal Foundation and Habitat for Humanity are pleased to announce an International Training on Open and Collaborative Platforms for Responsible Land Governance during Habitat III on 16 October, 2016 at the hotel NH Collection Quito Royal as a joint effort to facilitate access to open knowledge and information on land governance and land use.
The greatest challenges in providing secure land rights are in urban and peri-urban areas and the most productive rural areas. If incomes and food production are to be safeguarded and the growing pressure on urban areas is to be mitigated, the land rights urban and rural poor people must be made secure. Research shows that strengthening land and property rights goes hand in hand with the realization of development objectives related to poverty alleviation, food security, environmental sustainability and advancing women’s empowerment worldwide.
Open data, a key component in obtaining secure land rights, is crucial to achieving transparency and better governance, leading to strong and inclusive political, social and economic institutions and empowered citizens. Yet, information on land is generally fragmented and difficult to locate, and grassroots knowledge is particularly hard to find or may not be available online.
This training represents a major opportunity for governments, policy makers, researchers, development professionals, as well as representatives from grassroots organizations, civil society and intergovernmental agencies to get the tools to tackle these challenges. The training will introduce of the concepts of Data, Open Data and Linked Open Data, demonstrate the importance of metadata and controlled vocabularies, detail the steps to shifting from keeping information in silos to moving towards an open system and explore the diverse opportunities created by taking an open approach.
The training is being organized in partnership with the Global Land Tool Network (GLTN) and Cadasta.
The training is free of charge. Lunch and coffee breaks will be provided. Participation is limited, so please register in advance.
