Las iniciativas para reducir las emisiones de la deforestación y la degradación forestal (REDD) dependerán fundamentalmente de la población rural para manejar los recursos forestales. Aunque el diseño de marcos, mecanismos y acuerdos para implementar los programas de REDD ha sido objeto de considerable atención, todavía no está claro cómo funcionará REDD+ en la práctica y cómo se garantizará la participación de la población local.

This occasional paper is the result of research carried out from 2006 to 2008 on the effects of new tenure rights for forest-based communities in Latin America on access to forest resources and benefits. Focused on seven different regions in four countries, the paper examines changes in statutory rights, the implementation of those rights in practice, and the extent to which they have led to tangible new benefits from forests, particularly to new sources of income.

This document is intended for those interested in gathering natural resource information that reflects the needs of local communities. It describes a multidisciplinary survey developed with indigenous communities in the fores-rich landscapes of the Malinau watershed in East Kalimantan (Indonesian Borneo). The final methods reflect a mixture of judgements, compromises and reactions to trials over many months. It is intended that it is useful to readers from diverse backgrounds given the multidisciplinary nature of the procedures described. This is not intended as a manual.

Penerbitan buku ini diharapkan juga dapat memberi sumbangan pada wacana yang masih terus bergulir tentang zonasi TN, terutama zona khusus, sehingga membantu mencapai mimpi keseimbangan antara pelestarian alam dan peningkatan kesejahteraan masyarakat.

The Grab Bag' is designed to complement 'the BAG' and for use by social scientists who may find 'the BAG' overly prescriptive. The eight methods presented are either more difficult for non-social scientists to use or, in a couple of cases, can substitute for one or more method presented in 'the BAG'. 'The Scoring and Analysis Guide' provides the user with help in making an actual assessment of the social C&I, based on the results of these methods.
